【Technical articles】Multi-Tool Design and Analysis of an Automotive HUD

The HUD design presented here is strictly a design study. It was not developed with a particular car in mind, and it is not a fully optimized or finished design. The intent is simply to present some of the design techniques that can be employed to develop an automotive HUD. Typically, a HUD design starts with a preliminary performance specification and a few CAD drawings to illustrate the packaging requirements. A lens designer will then proceed to investigate different optical configurations to determine the feasibility of the design. Usually, there will be some negotiation of the performance requirements and packaging to find a practical solution. After some number of design iterations, a preliminary design will emerge. The preliminary design evolves into a buildable design after consideration of tolerances, assembly and alignment issues, costs, stray light, and other considerations.
